Your aim, when taking the IELTS, is to obtain the highest possible score so you won’t have to take the exam again later. It can be difficult to obtain the scores you need at each segment. Proper examination preparation and getting a decent night’s sleep the evening before the exam are great ways to prepare. Here are some tips and tricks you can use when taking the IELTS to help you attain a high IELTS score:
- Begin your training early, be consistent, and keep track of your progress regularly.
- Systematically, master modern English grammar.
- Practice four ways to use your English skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Take the opportunity to communicate in English both verbally, and in written form.
- Enrich the words. This is not happening immediately. Aim to learn at least 10 new words every day from different subject areas.
- Write longer texts dealing with various subjects-management, economics, culture, history, sciences, etc.
- In English, listen to the news and watch documentaries on various subjects.
- Practice talking about yourself with other English speakers-your hobbies, interests, everyday life, family, jobs, hopes, and professional ambitions.
- If you have a solid base of knowledge and skills in the English language, take an IELTS course or work with a qualified IELTS tutor.
- When you’re not sure if you’re ready to start training for the IELTS exam, take a screening test and get input on your level and next steps from a qualified teacher.
- Remember to follow the timing suggested for optimizing points in each segment of the study. For example, Task 2 probably has more points than Task 1.
- Make sure your thoughts and suggestions are structured before writing them out in the Written column. Take a moment to make a rough outline of what you want to write, because this will allow you to express your thoughts and opinions.
- During the spoken portion of the IELTS stop talking to the recording equipment. Make sure you directly address the examiner by making eye contact as you speak.
- As you listen to a recording, focus only on the questions that relate to the part being played at the moment.
- You are often given short periods in between sections of the recording. Use this time to begin writing responses to the questions.
- Questions regarding the Listening segment continue to follow the order of details contained in the recordings. Make sure you test your grammar and spelling before you add answers to the Answer Board.
- Often read every portion of the IELTS instructions to check that you are correctly answering the questions. You will be expected to respond in your own words in some Reading activities, for example, while others may want you to use words from the text in your response.
